TWO-DAY NATIONAL SEMINAR ON
THE KERALA MODEL OF DEVELOPMENT-PROSPECTS AND CHALLENGES
BY THE POST GRADUATE DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS
ABOUT NATIONAL SEMINAR
The state of Kerala has been an outlier in the context of India’s development. Kerala is the best performing state- or perhaps one among the top achievers- when various social or quality-of –life indicators are considered. General literacy, female literacy, maternal mortality, sex ratio at birth, life expectancy at birth, gender equality-Kerala is in the lead on all these makers of development. Over the last two decades, the have been further changes in Kerala’s economy and society- the impact of WTO agreements on Kerala’s plantation sector, some modest growth in the IT industry , an influx of migrant workers from Eastern India, rising concerns over ecological damage and environmental sustainability etc. What is the prognosis for the so-called ‘Kerala Model of Development’ in this era of international quiet over globalization? Can the state correct the nature of its development by adopting a different policy framework? This seminar is an attempt to address these questions and concern s from a multidisciplinary perspective. Established academicians and intellectuals with expertise in these various fields, as well as research scholars shared their view points on the future of Kerala Model.
