The Malayalam Department/wing started functioning with a P.G batch in 2003. U.G. courses began in 2014. There is also a Taliyola sekharam,Departmental Library and the Purushothaman Nair memorial chair.

In addition to organizing  environmental protection programes, the department conducts several national and intenational seminars.  Special  classes are held for the promotion of Sanskrit language and performing arts along with lectures are conducted on visual arts.  Researchers under the age of 30 are awarded the Purushothaman Nair Momorial Endowment. The research talent award under the agies of M. M . Purushothaman Nair Chair was awarded to M.G.University Vice Chancellor Dr.Sabu Thomas.  The students go out with an excellent standard /quality of education.
